School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Outro: World-Building Within and Outside the Studio,” an exhibition of thesis projects by MFA Fine Arts students, curated by Herb Tam. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, July 21, through Monday, August 15, at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th Floor, New York City.

“Outro: World Building Within and Outside the Studio,” an exhibition of new work by recent graduates of SVA’s MFA Fine Arts program, explores new possibilities for storytelling, representational politics, rendering the subconscious, discourses with abstraction and the grid, recoding pop cultural signifiers, and excavating spiritual and kinship customs. The works on view, selected by guest curator Herb Tam in collaboration with the artists, are the culmination of studio practices that engaged internal reckonings over process, form and intention. They are a final statement—an outro—to an intense two-year program.

In my latest work “Dreaming Abyss”, I am using sculptures, sand, plants, two dimensional forms and symbols to create an installation. I use symbolism to construct a unique visual language. The forms organize the space and create the abstract flow of the liquid element. The installation consists of five statues. The floor of the space is filled up with sea sand. The sculptures seem to be flooding on the surface of square pools filled up with blue water. Plants are spread around the installation and create the atmospheric image of a microclimate, giving the visitor the feeling that the vegetation does not follow the linear time and exists in infinity.

The dream was like “ I was swimming in the sea, and I felt my legs heavy. I put my head in the water and I saw big sinkers that were part of my body and I started to go down. As soon as I reached the bottom I realized that I didn’t need oxygen and so I decided to start walking. I was walking for 5 minutes and suddenly I arrived in front of a bright door. What I saw in that white room was incredible. A treasure of ancient objects.
